Once, a friend of mine equated a PT package cost offered at her club to a nice bike she'd been eying, "..and I can make payments on it." She said. The reality is she'll never really ride the bike but her perception of getting a big ticket item, by paying in installments, made more sense. We are a society that rationalizes the 'why's' of spending money by the 'how's' - making payments.
